Ear setback
is a frequently performed procedure. The majority of patients are
corrected at about age 7. The ears have achieved 90% or more of their
full growth and at that age, other children begin to taunt the child
with protruding ears. Many adults who never were offered correction as a
child also undergo this surgery. In a child, it is done asleep. In an
adult, I perform this surgery awake under local anesthesia. A protective
dressing is worn for about 5 days and a headband to sleep for 3 weeks.
Cleft
earlobes from earrings that have pulled through are also frequently
corrected. This is a very short procedure under local anesthesia and I
recommend re-piercing at about 6 weeks.
Scar
Guard
Several products are
available that may aid in reduction of visible scarring. These
include Cica Care silicone gel sheeting, Kelocote silicone cream, and my
preference which is ScarGuard (WWW.ScarGuard.com)
. ScarGuard combines several of these modalities and is easier to
use.
Whichever one you choose,
I believe that scarring is, in fact, improved by using these types of
products.
If you are having surgery
I recommend that you review the information at WWW.ScarGuard.com
and talk to your surgeon about how to achieve the best result possible.
Old scars can often be treated and improved as well!
