Silicone Gel
implants, contrary to what many people believe, were not taken off the
market. These implants were reclassified at the time of the implant
controversy, and now are only available in an FDA approved study of gel
implants under the care of an approved investigator. Dr. Studin is
one of the relatively few surgeons in the country authorized as an
investigator in this study.
Conditions
that may qualify a woman for Silicone Gel Implants under the Adjunct
Study
- Thin
skin with small, hanging breasts.
- Need
for a lift and Breast Implants simultaneously.
- Rippling
of the skin with saline Breast Implants
- Silicone
Breast Implants needing change
- Severe
Asymmetry (Large size difference)
- Chest
wall deformities
Patients with these problems and existing
breast implants can request to be included in the Adjunct Study and have
silicone gel Breast Implants. Silicone Gel Breast Implants,
according to many surgeons, are the best way to correct skin
rippling that occasionally occurs over saline Breast Implants and
can result in a softer breast.
While silicone gel Breast Implants are
not indicated for most patients seeking primary breast enlargement,
those patients that have the problems described above should take the
time to sit for an extended consultation with either Dr. Studin or one
of the other surgeon - investigators in the study and explore their
options thoroughly. This choice can sometimes make the difference
between a natural and unnatural result in the right patient. It is not
true that acceptance into the study reduces the cost of Breast Implants.
There is no financial help offered by either the Implant Company or the
FDA for this.
